Home Brew Basics

First and foremost, it’s extremely important that all of your equipment and accessories are clean and sanitary for good tasting beer. The basic ingredients need to make beer are water, malted barley, hops and yeast.

First you need to make the wort. Wort is the liquid extracted from the mashing process. Wort contains the sugars that will be fermented by the brewing yeast to produce alcohol. To make wort in very simple terms the malted barley (malt), hops and water are boiled for a period of time. The wort is then poured in the fermenter and cooled. After it is cooled the yeast (brewers yeast) is placed in the fermenter and an airlock is placed over the fermenter.

The yeast then begins to do its thing and grows as it consmes the sugars. After about 1 to 2 weeks the yeast will fall to the bottom of the fermenter. The beer is then bottled and stored for a couple of weeks to carbonate.
