Beer and BBQ

I don’t what’s better, drinking beer while you’re barbequing or drinking beer while you’re eating barbequed food. There’s nothing quite like a hot summer day, standing behind the BBQ grill burning steaks with a beer in hand. I got to admit it’s a toss up, but there’s nothing quite like a great steak with a hoppy bitter Pale Ale or bratwurst with a malty Marzen style Lager. Check out some of our great BBQ recipes and of course we’ll make some suggestions on what type of beer to drink.

Beer and Food Pairing

There does'nt seem to be any rules set in stone as far as what beer goes with what food. Most of the experts agree that in order to find a good pairing, you should find a balance between the food and beer. Balancing beer and food generally means an offsetting flavor.

For example sour would be offset by sweet. There’s not a whole lot of really sweet beers,  therefore sour foods generally will not pair well with beer.

Salty foods obviously create thirst. With salty foods a bit of hoppy bitterness in either a Lager of a Pale Ale is usually a good combination. Snack foods like potato chips, pretzels and peanuts are synonymous in America with mass-produced lager beers.

A good balance for bitter foods is a beer with more of a malty character. When I think of bitter foods I tend to think more of certain vegetables like olives, broccoli and pickles. Endive that’s used in salads is another good example of a bitter food that goes good with a malty beer.

With sweeter foods the offsetting rule doesn’t seem to carry a lot of weight. Just the thought of a hoppy beer and something sweet seems repelling. The only thing that comes to mind with anything sweet is possibly a Chocolate Stout. Usually when dessert is served I either pass on desert or stop drinking beer during the desert.

Spicy hot food pairing kind of depends on what affect you want. If you want a balance or something to offset the spiciness you’d want a beer with some malty flavors with a little sweetness to it like a Marzen style Lager would do the trick. If you want the hotness of spicy foods to intensify in flavor try a hoppy beer with a higher alcohol content like a hoppy India Pale Ale (IPA).
